Suigetsukan translated directly: Sui is the Japanese word for water, Getsu means moon, and Kan stands for hall.
We are a not-for-profit martial arts Dojo (training-hall) in Oakland, California offering traditional Japanese martial arts. Suigetsukan is committed to making martial arts more acceptable and understood to the public. We are dedicated to a supportive and integrative teaching environment as well as to the ongoing and committed practice of our arts - so that the artistry of martial traditions will continue to be available to those who seek it - and to maintaining the valuable teachings which martial arts can provide. We work within the martial arts community, so that we may share knowledge and learn from one another. As a not-for-profit entity we have monthly dojo meetings. Some meeting minutes can be found here. |
Mike Esmailzadeh Kyoshi is the founder and head teacher of Suigetsukan which he started in 1991 on Alcatraz Ave. in Berkeley, California. In 1993 Suigetsukan moved into a warehouse in Oakland, California where it stayed for ten years.
On May 31, 2003, the Dojo had its grand opening in its new, larger space at 103 International Blvd., very close to Lake Merrit (and to Lake Merrit BART station).

Thanks Thanks to all who helped make Suigetsukan what it is! Specifically to all the people who worked so hard on construction. This is the second time that the Dojo has required extensive construction (first to make the 1051 warehouse work, and most recently to enable us to move into our new space). Many people have participated in these efforts. While there are clearly too many people to thank here, there are a few folks without whose professional expertise the project would have been impossible. Special thanks to: Jess Alexander, Donna Church, Andy Miller, Marko, Mike Nordahl, Russ Rhodes, and especially Greg Axe. |
